Fee Schedule – Excise Tax

Norfolk County Registry of Deeds and Norfolk Registry District of the Land Court Fee Schedule

Please note: The Norfolk County Registry of Deeds recorded land postage and document return charge for documents sent by mail or recorded in person is one dollar per document. This fee helps cover increased costs associated with mailing back original documents to filers. As of July 1, 2025, the postage charge does not apply to documents filed electronically.

The Registry accepts cash and or checks for recording and copy fees, payable to: Norfolk County Registry of Deeds. Please note: If a document needs to be recorded in the Land Court AND in the Registry, a separate check is required for each side. One for the Land Court fees and one for the Registry fees, both payable to the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds.

Deeds Excise Tax: An Excise Tax of $2.28 for each $500.00 and any fraction thereof, of the consideration stated on a deed or easement is required to be paid at the time of recording. For example, a deed of real estate of $155,000 requires excise taxes in the amount of $706.80. A separate check, which must be an attorney’s check or a bank check, is required for the Excise Tax, along with a check for the recording fees. All checks should be made payable to the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds. There is no excise tax due where the consideration is less than $100.00.
